South Africa has a sunscreen wipe  that you can wipe over your dog an hour before taking him out or playing sport-Supa Pet Sunscreen Wipes.

Some veterinarians recommend using  using a children’s sunscreen that contains avobenzone, also called Parsol 1789 which is a UVA blocker, and octisalate, which blocks UVB rays. Not using sunscreens that contain zinc oxide because accidental ingestion could lead to a serious condition called hemolytic anemia in some pets.

Zinc toxicity in dogs may have numerous symptoms:

  • Excessive and continuous vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Lack of appetite, lethargy and weakness.
  • Liver failure and jaundice
  • Kidney failure and red urination
  • Anaemia, pale gums

Another option is using a children’s sunscreen that has all the below.

  • It has an SPF (sun protection factor) of 18 (you should look for sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher for your dog)
  • It is a lotion, not a spray
  • The main ingredient is titanium dioxide
  •  paraben free
  •  fragrance free
  • Made organically from natural ingredients and is good for the skin, such as sunflower and jojoba seed oils, organic green tea leaf, chamomile flower, calendula flower and ginkgo leaf extracts, aloe juice and vitamin E.
  • Providing these foods for your canines helps protect them from being prone to sunburn, however they still need to use sunscreen and be indoors or in a shady spot in hot weather.
