CLIMBING DOG – LOUISIANA CATAHOULA LEOPARD DOG
This fun, super energetic dog is a working dog breed and originated from the Catahoula Lake region in central Louisiana.
Temperament
Enthusiastic working dog with a high energy level
Agile ,athletic ,highly intelligent, superb working dogs
Territorial and are more ‘ primitive psychologically’ than other dog breeds.
Often called ‘catdogs’ because of their intuitive behavior and climbing skills.
HEALTH
The Catahoula carries a gene that makes this breed more prone to deafness .Hip dysplasia occurs more frequently with the Catahoula.
Catahoula is an Indian word meaning “clear eyes” because of the blue eyes that Catahoulas have, but it also means “ clear lake” in Choctaw Indian.
Inherent nature to herd and needs to be outdoors since the Catahoula needs to burn off energy by running. However this breed needs to be indoors as well and treated as a companion dog. They do not fare well left alone and definitely should not be left outdoors for long periods of time.
Because the Catahoula is an assertive breed ,this breed is not well-suited to novice dog parents. They are not aggressive but if attacked can stand their ground and defend their property.

Eerie eyes!
I’ve heard of this “climbing” dog but didn’t know if it was true. Interesting 😀
stunning looking dog!
I have had two of these wonderful dogs and the present one is 1/2 Lacey 1/2 catahoula. Great combination but a climbing fool!
thanks for stopping by my blog today. Interesting piece on cat dogs. My sister has lived in LA for many years and I have never heard of the catdog. Dianne
I’ve known a couple Catahoolas who were just super cool dogs. Not at all aggressive, smart, and faithful.
Loved seeing this post. My grandson is a wildlife biologist and keeps three catahoulas as hunting dogs for his hunting business. Very nice dogs.
