Dingoes, like their wolf (canis lupus) are social animals and form packs. Vocal communication is important for dingoes because they are often separated. Dingoes howl and do not bark. There are three types of dingo howl.
- Moans
- Bark-howls
- Snuffs- 10 variations
Howls travel over large distances and have the purpose of locating other wild dogs ,attracting pack members, and repelling intruders from the pack home range.
Frequency
Frequency of the dingo howl varies throughout the whole year. Each day and each year frequency will vary and this is affected by
1.Breeding
2.Dispersal
3.Lactation
4.Social Stability
5.Dispersion
Most wild dogs hunt alone and in times when there are food shortages, dingo pack members become widely distributed within their home range. Howling is then more pronounced.Corbett (1995)
