The AKC first recognized this great breed just recently, in 2011 as a hound group.Great as hunters ,they are sturdy and can be found in a variety of colors such as black and white, tricolor and also blue tick to red ticking, which makes their coats have a wonderful apricot sheen. This breed was brought to the colonies from the UK in the 17th Century.

This breed is mostly bred in the US.
Health concerns with this breed are related to overheating while out hunting during the summer.
They are a breed that developed from the Virginia Hounds and were initially used for hunting raccoons during the evening and foxes during the day. They love to chase prey up a tree and stand beneath it barking loudly. They have a great nose and can track small and large prey , sometimes racoons, bears and cougars.They are used today in both competition and in field.
The most common color is the redtick color.
The English American Coonhound require exercise yet are calm dogs unless taught to hunt. Although they have a high prey drive, they are pretty low key and make good family dogs. Younger dogs can be super active and require lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Many say that this sweet breed love to nest and favor beds and couches.Having a low choppy bark and low drawn out bawls, they can be loud and do tend to make great watch dogs.
