Have you ever wondered about dog stereotypes across the US? The ubiquitous crossbreeds in LosAngeles that may be setting the current trend with celebrities, or the fluffy white Maltese.Vetstreet  survey suggested that perhaps a certain trend remains, especially amongst Labrador Retriever lovers. But what’s the real ranking for top dog in LA, possibly mix breeds adopted from shelters, that are setting current trends amongst celebrities.

Top Breeds Across the US:

Top slot: Labrador Retriever amongst 42 states.

Chihuahua ranked among the top three in 34 states.

American Pit Bull Terrier was a top three breed in 28 states.

American Pit Bull claimed the no. 1 spot in Rhode Island.

Yorkshire Terrier and German Shepherd breeds claimed the top five popular breed status in 37 states.

As for the Alaskan and Siberian Husky, well you guessed it, they both ranked as favorite breeds in Alaska.

Delaware ranked it’s top three breeds as German Shepherds, Golden Retriever and Boxer .

Mini micro trends such as the Border Collie made top ten in Idaho,South Dakota and Wyoming.

Bulldogs made top ten in ten states -mascot dogs.

Labradoodle and other designer, crossbreeds are gaining popularity across the US with the Labradoodle filling in the 10th spot in Oregon.

Goldendoodle ranked 9th place in Wisconsin and interestingly enough the crossbreed designer dogs ,did not claim any of the first ten spots in LA.Possibly because the trend now in LA is dog adoption and mix breeds that have become much more popular .

Pitbull type dogs are more popular than people think and they are the most common breed/breed mix found in shelters today. The Baltimore Humane Society is overrun with amazing pitbull type dogs that are just looking for their second chance.

Melissa’s comment holds the same status in Arizona as well. So many pit bulls and pit bull mixes are euthanized on a daily basis. As a 2 time pure pit Mom, 1 raised from a puppy, and 1 adult recycled from the street, 2 pit mixed also living at Run A Much Ranch, and countless fostering experiences, I can honestly say, you can’t go wrong adopting pit.

Interesting to see that Pit Bulls are still so popular, they get such (undeserved) negative press thanks to irresponsible owners and disgusting dog fights. Nice to read that adoption of shelter dogs and mixed breeds is becoming popular, wish people would do more of it or at least buy from legitimate breeders rather than purchasing designer breeds that are often bred for profit in puppy farms.
