New Hampshire Dog: The Chinook.Sled Dog

The Chinook originates from the US- New Hampshire.This breed is a northern breed derived from a single ancestor born in 1917.The offspring came from a Greenland Husky and a Saint Bernard mix.Arthur Treadwell, the Arctic explorer developed this sled breed.The Chinooks used to haul freight on Admiral Byrds’s 1929 Antarctic Expedition.They set sledding records for distance,speed and weight.This breed nearly died out in the 1980’s when there were only 11 ¬†breedable dogs left.Nonetheless, this breed has increased in numbers over recent years and has recently been accepted by the AKC.
  • This handsome breed is medium to large in size with a powerful build.Sometimes the ears are upright, but they can also drop or stand half-way up.With beautiful, almond -shaped eyes and a tapered muzzle, the Chinook has a thick ¬†double coat which is either tawny or a dark tawny with black markings on the ears and muzzle.

  • Height: 21-27 inches
  • Weight :55-70 pounds
  • The Chinook is longer in size than it is tall.


Temperament:This breed is a versatile breed that is loyal and hard-working.With a friendly temperament that is calm and reserved, the Chinook makes for a great family dog.This breed is not aggressive with strangers and is intelligent, easily trainable, yet matures slowly.The Chinook also gets along well with other animals and is not a guard dog.

Activity Level: Moderate

This breed loves to be active and tends to be best when socialized and around family.

Health Concerns: Cataracts, dysplasia,skin problems,cryptorchidism, siezures.
