This breed originates from Italy.Translated it means the lake dog from Romagna.This breed was used as a gun dog ,most specifically as a water retriever.It is also used to hunt truffles.
The Lagotto has large, round brown eyes that vary in shades from dark yellow to brown.With a wooly waterproof coat that is thick and curly, this breed is either off-white, white or brown in color.Sometimes the Lagotto has a white with brown or orange patched coat-roan colored.The Lagotto is born with white markings which disappears in adulthood.It is a hypoallergenic dog.

Many experts say that this breed should be groomed daily while others believe that their coats should be allowed to grow out naturally. Nonetheless, their coats do get matted easily with swimming and playing outdoors.
This breed lives to be around 16 years ,but does tend to suffer from hip dysplasia, benign juvenile epilepsy and cerebral anomaly.Pups have been important in the research done into epilepsy.The Lagotto breed carries a gene called Lgi2, that may be considered to be a gene also for human childhood epilepsy.Lgi2 is the first gene that is directly linked to the remission that sufferers experience after age 10.Today Lagotta breeders screen by using a genetic test to screen for this mutation.
